38 Winton Street

The house that once stood at 38 Winton Street, built around 1930, has since been demolished. The house was relocated to 38 Winton Street from the failed Group Settlement at Wonnerup. E J Hastie bought the house for £40 and relocated it to Bunbury. 38 Winton Street was one of the first houses in the Carey Park area before the government developed it in the 1950s. The block of land comprised 5 acres with few neighbours and services until the government developed Carey Park after World War Two.

The Wonnerup Group Settlement Scheme was one of a number developed in the 1920s and 1930s to expand settlement and agricultural development throughout the state's South West.

Winton Street was named for Charles Winton Higgins, a prominent citizen of Bunbury. Charles Higgins was a Bunbury councillor from 1926 to 1935 and again from 1937 to 1940. He was also a founding member of the St John Ambulance in Bunbury (1943-1947).
