He was the son of William David and Mary Ann. James married on 27/07/1881 in Fremantle to Alice Sara Dellar (21/05/1860-). Alice was born in Bunbury, as the daughter of Nathan and Sarah who arrived on 06/04/1859 on the Hamilla Mitchell. Their children were Ada Gertrude (1882-1904), Ethel Sara (1886-) who was raised by Granny Adams at a convent from 5 to 17 years, and an unnamed son who was stillborn and the mother died during birth. He was employed in Perth as a police constable in the 1850s, until he was dismissed. He travelled to Rottnest from Fremantle as a boatman, and had fishing interests.
