William was born in Bunbury as the son of George Hector and Hannah. He married on 29/12/1886 to Mary Ann Munday in Fremantle. Mary was the daughter of William, a Pensioner Guard, and Mary Ann. William was educated at Busselton. He moved to Cossack as the first teacher there for two years. He resigned in 1881 to start working for the firm Symon, Hammond and Hubble, which were ironmongers at Fremantle. By 1892 he was the manager of their Carnarvon branch. In 1893 he was the owner of the Port Hotel, owner of cutter Will Watch, and pastoral leases. William established Mardathuna Station. He was a member of the Town Council and Mayor. He was an active member of the Liberal party there for over twenty-three years. He opened mica mines at Morrissey Creek. His wife was a guano trader at Shark Bay from 1899 onwards. He was a member of the Church of England.
