John was born in Scotland and died in Perth. He was the son of Doctor John. John arrived in 1842 on the Trusty with his parents. John married on 6/9/1871 to Susan Margaret Finnerty (1852-1889) in Western Australia. Susan was born in Perth. She was the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth. John remarried in 1891 to Grace Ogilvy Ferguson (1859-20/10/1919) in Western Australia. Grace was the daughter of Donald and Catherine. John's children were Margaret Isabella (1873-1887), John Maxwell (1875-1927), Charles Donald (1873-1942), Violet Revell (1877-1942), James Norman and William Eric (twins) (1879-1961 and 1879-1952), Alice Elizabeth (1881-1951), Rachel Frances (1883-1975), Andrew Ogilvie (1886-1968), Alan Wedderburn (1888-1971), Catherine Balfour (1892-1975), Donald Maxwell (1893-1946), Grace Ogilvy (1897-1971) and Marion Fleming (1902-1943). John became Captain in a merchant navy. He returned from overseas in 1867 to his estate. He had the firm of Ferguson and Mumme. He leased the Swan Brewery in 1876 and opened ice works. He was part owner of three ships and owner of one, including Amur. He was listed in the 1880s as a Master Mariner and brewer. John had interests in the Timber Mills at Cookernup, Yarloop and Wooroloo with Fremantle, Bunbury, Geraldton, and Coolgardie offices. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly for North Fremantle from 08/1903-06/1904. The family made several voyages. John was educated at Bale School Perth and England. He was a resident at Arundel Street in 1892. John was a Presbyterian.
