James was formerly in the Army, as a clerk, then became schoolmaster of Bunbury from 1853-1861. He was an Accountant by 1870 and was at Busselton by 1870 . He was the proprietor of "Wellington Hotel". James was a member of the Town Council (John Forrest was one of his pupils). He employed two tickets of leave men in 1865 and 1869. He was a member of the Church of England and his wife was Roman Catholic.
