As a farmer in Essex, England, before he came to Australia, he brought a team of horses, fruit trees, vines and other stock with him. He applied for 300 acres at Gingin, where he leased part of "Cheriton". On 29/03/1892 he selected "Newbicup", part of Anthony Horden's grant at Boyup Brook. He was an orchardist, vigneron and farmer and a member of the Upper Blackwood Road Board around 1896.
