James was born in England, as the son of Henry John, nephew of William Locke. Jame arrived around 1872. He married on 07/11/1861 to Mary Ellza Stone (17/10/1842 - 25/09/1889). James remarried on 15/01/1891 in Bunbury to Sophia Louisa Clipton (23/08/1847-25/07/1910). Sophia died in Perth. She was the daughter of Rob. W. Their children were George Dudley, Alfred Howden and Ethel Harriet. James was listed as the 1st station master at Beverley in the Government Gazette between 1886 and 1890. He was also listed as a farmer at "Birdwood" woodlupine. His religion was the Church of England.
