Arthur was born in England as the son of John. He arrived in 1888. Arthur married in 1890 to Sophia Ellen Hayward (1867-). Their children were Catherine Agnes (1891-), John Frederick (1893-1901), Jessie Louisa (1894-), Ethel Grace (1896-), Arthur Robert (1898-) and Frank Hayward (1900-). Arthur farmed with Thomas Hayward at Woralup and was partnered with him in an ironmongery and agency business at Bunbury and then between 1898 and 1908 with George Hayward. In 1910 admitted F. W. Roberts as partner. He was the treasurer of the Cathedral Council. He was educated in Ipswich, England.
