FORREST John

Lord, Baron of Bunbury (22/08/1847-03/09/1918). John was born in Bunbury and died at sea. He was the son of William and Margaret. John married on 29/02/1876 to Margaret Elvire Hamersley (22/10/1844-13/06/1929) in Perth. Margaret was born in France as the daughter of Edward and Anne. John was employed in the Lands and Survey Department. Explorer West-East from 1870 to 1875. He was the Surveyor General from 1883-1884. He was a Member of the Legislative Council in 1890. He was a Member of the Legislative Assembly in Bunbury from 1890 to 1901. John was active in the promotion of the Trans-Continental Railway. John was the first Premier of Western Australia. He was a Member of the House of Representatives from 1901 to 1918, the Minister of Defence in 1901, Prime Minister General in 1901, Home Affairs Treasurer in 1905, 1909 and 1913 and Acting Prime Minister in 1907. A peerage was conferred on 02/19/1918. He got honours from Italy, Russia, Austria and England. He employed eighteen ticket of leave men between 1866 and 1877. John was educated at Picton, Bunbury and Hale School. He was commemorated in 1979 in a brass plaque in Perth pavement. He was a member of the Church of England.
