James married on 29/07/1861 in Fremantle to Margaret Whelan (1837-04/06/1870). Margaret arrived in Western Australia on 06/04/1859 aboard the Hamilla Mitchell. James remarried on 27/12/1873 in Bunbury to Eleanor Elwood (1848-). Elanor arrived in Western Australia on 11/08/1867 aboard the Palestine. James's children were Elizabeth (1864-), who was born in York, Christina (1866-), who was born in Albany, James (1869, died in infancy), William Francis (1879-1886), who was born in Toodyay and James Levi (1882-1885) who was also born in Toodyay. James was a Police Constable but travelled to York in 1865 then Albany that year. He bought Albany Town Lots in 1867, listed with three daughters. In 1871, he became Police Sergeant in Bunbury during 1873, then in Toodyay during 1878, Northam during 1880, later dismissed in 1888 due to staff reductions.
