Arthur was born at Bunbury. He was the son of Daniel and Eliza North. He married Margaret Shananah, the daughter of Owen and Bridget nee Ryan Shanahan. Their child was Sylvia Grace (1894-). He did a five-year apprenticeship in blacksmithing and spent ten years in this trade at Northam, York and Coolgardie. He then returned to Bunbury and opened a land and estate agency. He was a Member of the Municipal Council, Secretary to the Friendly Society Association, Secretary of the South West Australian Rifle Union, and the Traders Association of Bunbury.
