SAMPSON, Doctor John

(1820-11/11/1904).

John died in Bunbury and was an ex-convict. John arrived on 11/07/1857 on the Clara. John's first wife, Maria Warne (-25/08/1867), followed John on 08/08/1859 on the Travancore. They married in the United Kingdom. Maria died in Bunbury at the age of 47. John remarried on 08/04/1868 in Perth to Mrs Sophia Wilhelm. John was a surgeon and medical officer in Bunbury from 1860-80 and bought 40 acres in 1867. He was an accomplished musician and was an organist at the Congregational Church. He initiated the first brass band at Bunbury. He purchased the instruments and was the conductor. He employed twenty ticket of leave men on occasions between 1864-1872. He travelled to South Australia on 11/05/1886 and returned on 10/08/1886 on the ship Victorian.
