SALTER, Samuel (1819-). Samuel arrived on 10/04/1852 on the Diadem at Australind, with his wife Sarah (1819-) and Children Joseph (1841-1852), died during the voyage, Charles (1843), Sarah E. (1844-), Samuel August (1849-) and Anna Mary Ann (1852-1919). He worked as a shepherd in the Bunbury district before moving to Fremantle in February 1848 on the ship Typo and worked for E.Beere at Bolgart. Later moved to Canning district where he employed seven ticket of leave men on occasions 1852-1868, four of them woodcutters listed as labourers in 1864. 


SAMPSON, Doctor John (1820-11/11/1904). John died in Bunbury and was an ex-convict. John arrived on 11/07/1857 on the Clara. John's first wife, Maria Warne (-25/08/1867), followed John on 08/08/1859 on the Travancore. They married in the United Kingdom. Maria died in Bunbury at the age of 47. John remarried on 08/04/1868 in Perth to Mrs Sophia Wilhelm. John was a surgeon and medical officer in Bunbury from 1860-80 and bought 40 acres in 1867. He was an accomplished musician and was an organist at the Congregational Church. He initiated the first brass band at Bunbury. He purchased the instruments and was the conductor. He employed twenty ticket of leave men on occasions between 1864-1872. He travelled to South Australia on 11/05/1886 and returned on 10/08/1886 on the ship Victorian. 


SAUNDERS, H. He was in Bunbury from 1879-1880, then Albany 1880-4. He was employed as a Tinsmith.


SAW, Ebenezer (1836/7-26/02/1890). Ebenezer was born in England as the son of Henry and Elizabeth. He arrived on 10/08/1848 on the ship Trusty with his brothers Henry and Thomas. He arrived again on 09/11/1860 on board the vessel Lord Raglan. In 1861, his uncle John Allnutt passed to him the leasehold of his Australind farm and right of purchase of his business. He was a farmer in the Bunbury district, merchant and newsvendor in Perth. He employed two ticket of leave men at Australind in 1864 and 1867.


SCHOFIELD, J .M. He was listed as a passenger between Bunbury and Fremantle in 02/1887.


SCOTT, Edward. He married Esther Ann Byrnes. Their children were Esther Mary (1887-), born in Fremantle as a Roman Catholic, William Joseph (1889-), was baptized as Roman Catholic in Toodyay, Ellen Teresa (1896-1896), born in Bunbury and died in York and James Hubert Joseph (1897-), born as Roman Catholic in York. In Bunbury in 1895 and York in 1896 as Inspector.  


SCOTT, George Fredericton (29/4/1854-). George was born the son of John and Catherine. George married Ann Elizabeth (1862-12/05/1941). Ann was born in Albany and died in Stratham. George and Ann had one child named George. George worked as a Farmer at "Minninup" Bunbury.   


SCOTT, John (18/10/1820-11/02/1880). John was born in Scotland as the son of John and Ellen. John arrived on 05/03/1831 on the ship Eliza with his parents. On 20/11/1850, John married Catherine Roberts (24/10/1831-18/01/1923). Catherine was born in Cornwall and died in Bunbury. She arrived in 1842 on the ship Diadem with her parents, William and Isabella. John and Catherine's children were John Robert (1851-1929), George Fredericton (1854-), William (1856-), Isabella Marion (1858-1948), Ellen (1860-1914), Albert Arthur (1865-1914), Catherine Amelia (1867-1964), Selina (1869-1969), Janet Louisa (1872-1964) and Joseph Edward (1876-). They Lived in Capel in 1884, and he was a Bunbury farmer in 1877 at "Minninup". He was a postmaster. In 1850, he leased John Hutt's Lot 47 for 33 years. He also owned land at Donnelly Bridge and held a 20,000 acres leasehold. He employed twenty-seven ticket of leave men on occasions between 1862-1879, including two teachers in 1874, 6 bootmakers and a cook at Stratham Picton Wedderburn and "Minninup".


SCOTT, John R. (05/1796-29/07/1880). John was born in Scotland and died in Picton. John arrived on 05/03/1831 on the ship Eliza with his wife and family. John had married Ellen (Helen) McGregor (1794-13/03/1883). Ellen died in Picton. John and Ellen's children were (Stepson) Daniel McGregor (1815-1898), John (1820-1880), Robert (1824-1907), William Proctor (1832-1846). John was a servant to H.G. Smith in Guildford in the 1830s. He was Granted Swan Lots 17 and 27. He moved to Bunbury in 01/1838 as manager of Stirling's Estate "Eelup". John was the first settler in Bunbury. He leased "Koombana" farm from Stirling. He was commemorated in 1979 in a brass plaque in Perth pavement for the year of 1838. 


SCOTT, R. P. He married Agnes (-24/12/1861). Agnes died at Vasse. He purchased Bunbury Town lots in 1852 and 1855. He also purchased the Busselton Town lot "Eulajugulup" Vasse in 1860.


SCOTT, Robert (1824-05/04/1907). He was the son of John R and Ellen (Helen). Robert arrived on 05/03/1831 on the ship Eliza, with his parents. In 1853 Robert married Jane Roberts (1835-07/06/1926). Jane was the daughter of William and Isabella. Robert and Jane's children were Henry William (1853-), Robert (1855-1902), William Proctor (1856-1930), David, Daniel Montague (1858-), Walter (1860-1899), Agnes Flora (1865-), Helena Jane (1867-), May Maria (1874-), Queenie and Ernest Elliott (1876-1931). Robert was appointed Police Constable between 1852-1853 and then was a Bunbury farmer. He employed four ticket of leave men on occasions between 1864 and 1870-1872. He had a leasehold in the Sussex district in the 1870s. Robert and brother William travelled to England and returned on 11/11/1867 on the ship Zephyr.


SECKINGTON (Seckingham), Edward (09/1822-) Edward was an expiree born in England. He arrived on 01/05/1853 on the ship Pyrenees. On 30/07/1855, Edward married Elizabeth Cunningham (1835-) at Guildford. Elizabeth was born in Ireland and arrived on 13/06/1853 on board the vessel Sabrina. Edward and Elizabeth's children were Mary Ann (1855-), Sarah (1856-), and Samuel (1868-). He was listed in the York Census in 1859 as a labourer, literate and part of the church of England. His wife was illiterate and Roman Catholic. All his children were listed as Roman Catholic. In Bunbury, he was a saddler from 1873-1876. He employed four ticket of leave men at "Wesburn" York on occasions between 1865-1869 and two (one a saddler) at Bunbury 1871 and 1873. He was listed at Albany in 1881. 


SEXTON, William. He arrived from New Zealand. William married Alathea Sinclair. Alathea was the daughter of John and Julia. William was a Timber miller at Bunbury. 


SHEAHAN, John (07/11/1871-02/11/1951). John was born in Victoria and died in Bunbury. He was the son of John and Ellen. He came with his brother Con from Victoria in the 1890s. On 02/08/1899, John married Susannah Hitchcock (08/04/1878-25/12/1961) in Northam. Susannah was born in Northam and died in Bunbury. She was the daughter of John and Eleanor. John and Susannah's children were Clara Sarah (1900-), Vera Gladys (1902-), Edward William (1905-1976), John Francis (1907-), Ivy Pearl (1909-1976), Ruby Grace (1912-), Ernest James e(1917-) and Douglas Leslie (1918-). He employed men as log haulers at Wellington Mills in Bunbury for a few years. In 1905, he bought "Cold Harbour Farm" in York, which was sold in 1909 to purchase "Jacob's Well" near Quairading. He then moved to "Dangin" and then Beverley for children's education, while John worked on a small block of land at the Dale.


SHEEN, John (1828-01/12/1895). John was an ex-convict. He arrived on 25/10/1850 on the ship Hashemy. In 1856, John married Jane Adams (11/05/1834-2108/1907) in Western Australia. Jane was the daughter of William and Elizabeth. John and Jane's children were Joseph, Emily (1864-), Amelia (1865-1934), Margaret (1867-1946), Matilda and Anna (1868-). He was a sawyer in Guildford, where he employed six ticket of leave men on occasions between 1851-1864 and possibly also one ticket of leave man in Bunbury 1870. 


SHEPPERD, John (1814-). John arrived on 25/06/1840 on the ship Runnymede with his Regiment. On 29/03/1843, John married Anne Sarah Murphy (1825-) in Bunbury. John and Anne's children Henry (1845-) and A--- (1846-). John was a Sergeant of 51st Regiment and then promoted from Corporal on 15/10/1840. He was stationed at Leschenault in 1840, Vasse in 1841, Bunbury in 1843 and York in 1845. 


SHIELS (Shields), John (1825-). He was an ex-convict. John arrived on 24/05/1855 on the ship Stag. He bought a Perth lot in 1860. He employed three ticket of leave labourers at Bunbury in 1866 and 1870. Two more were employed at Perth in 1867 and 1873. 


SHILLING, Thomas (1838-). Thomas was an ex-convict. Thomas arrived on 21/01/1858 on the ship Edwin Fox. Thomas employed three tickets of leave men, one as a sawyer at Perth in 1866, one at Bunbury in 1870 and the last as a labourer at Albany. He was a woodcutter contracted to supply sleepers for the construction of the Great Southern Railway on a section south of Cranbrook. One of his sawpits was located at Shilling Lake near Kendenup. 


SHIVERS, Henry (1868-). Henry was born the son of Arthur and Bridget. On 30/05/1898, Henry married Harriette Elizabeth Mary Clark in Bunbury. She was the daughter of Alfred Stevens and Caroline. She was also the widow of Thomas Charles Maguire. Henry had five stepchildren from his wife's past marriage, Mona, Hary, Vera, Alice and Grace. He Was a farmer in Waterloo. 


SHOLL, Richard Adolphus (18/12/1846-09/05/1919). Richard was born in Bunbury and died in Perth. He was the son of Robert John and Mary Ann. On 09/02/1872, Richard had his first marriage in Perth with Elime Florence Ashton (20/08/1851-02/11/1877). Elime was the Daughter of Henry. On 26/01/1887, Richard remarried to Mary Howard Sanders. Mary was the daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Sanders of the 30th Regiment. Richard only had children with his first wife, and the children were Henry Robert (1873-1899), Treverton Charles (1875-1877) and Elite (1877-). During 1870, he worked in Perth as a 2nd Class Clerk at a Post Office, Chief Clerk in 1874 and Postmaster General of Western Australia from 1889-1909. In 1876 he was a Lieutenant in the Volunteer Rifles (Promoted to Major). Justice of the peace in 1891. He was a Perth City Councillor. He was with the W.A. Turf Club in 1879-1889 and a Committee member. He was a member of the Licensing Branch and also a member of the Cricket Club. He was educated at Hale School. He was part of the Church of England.


SHOLL, Robert Frederick (18/12/1848-08/12/1909). Robert was born in Bunbury and died in Perth. He was born as the third son of Robert John and Mary Ann. In 1878, Robert married Elizabeth Cosgrove. Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas of Sydney. Robert and Elizabeth's children were (Bessie) Tossie (1879-1919), Frederick Robert (1882-1937), Fanny (1884-1970s) and Guy Treverton (1886-1931). They arrived on 22/11/1878 on the ship Otway from the Eastern colonies. They made several voyages later to the Eastern colonies. He managed an Irwin sheep station for three years. He went northwest in 1868 to Nickol Bay to be a pearler. He had gold mine interests in "Weeriana" and was one to send stock to Western Kimberleys. Robert was a member of Kimberley Pastoral Co. Director of Lady Shenton and Fraser Mines. Robert was a member of the Federal Convention 1897. He was part of the Church of England. 


SHOLL, Robert John (1819-19/06/1866). Robert was born in England and died in Perth. John was the second son of Robert and Elizabeth. Robert arrived on 18/11/1840 on the ship Shepherd with his mother and brothers. On 21/09/1844, Robert married Mary Ann Berkelman (1828-16/07/1889) in Bunbury. Robert and Mary's children were Treverton Charles (1845-1867), Richard Adolphus (1846-1919), Robert Frederick (1848-1909), (Horace), Horatio William (1852-1927), Edward (1854-1896), Penelope Panny (1856-1931), Arthur (1858-1894) and Charles Edwin (1861-1889). He worked in Perth and Bunbury in Civil Service as a clerk and tidewaiter from 1849-66. A resident magistrate in Camden Harbour in 1866 and then again in Roebourne. He was a Justice of Peace until 1881 when he transferred to Swan. He was commemorated in 1979 in a brass plaque in Perth pavement for the year 1866. 


SHOLL, Treverton Charles (07/07/1845-03/1867). Treverton was born in Bunbury and died while at sea. He was the son of Robert John and Mary Ann. During 1863-4, he was a temporary clerk in the Convict Establishment. He went to Camden Harbour in the Kimberley district as a clerk with his father, the official administrator of the ill-fated settlement. In 1865 explored the King Leopold Ra region. He moved with the official party to Nickol Bay. He was returning south on the ship Emma, lost in a cyclone off the North West coast.


SHURMAN, William John (1857-). William arrived on 13/09/1877 on the ship Helena Mena from London with his wife, Grace (1853-). He was a miner then joined the police force in 1880. William was stationed at Bunbury and transferred to Perth in 1881. 


SIMMONS, Thomas (1837-22/02/1909). Thomas died in Boyanup. He arrived on 13/09/1852 on the ship Samuel on 04/11/1862. Thomas married Charlotte Wood (03/05/1845-13/05/1935) in Bunbury. Charlotte was born in Bunbury as the daughter of William J and Sarah. Thomas and Charlotte's children were Thomas (1873-1947), George (1877-1943), John (1881-1940) and Maud (1884-1978). He bought 40 acres in the Wellington district. Thomas was a small farmer at Boyanup, while his wife was district midwife. He employed nine tickets of leave men on occasions between 1862-1871, 2 of them being sawyers. Thomas was part of the Church of England. 


SINCLAIR, John (1833-06/09/1916). John was born on Shetland Island and died in Bunbury. John was the son of George and Margaret. He arrived on 19/01/1860 on the ship Dolphin. John married Julia Ringwood (1845-03/05/1909). Julia was born in Dublin and died in Bunbury. John and Julia's children were Joseph Harrington, James Robert, Alathea, Albert Ernest, William, Mary Ann (1862-1925), Daniel Laurence, George Jeffery, Margaret, John Thomas, Agnes Maud (1864-1866), Julia Catherine, Charles Augustus, Egbert Bertram and Frederick Ringwood. John worked as a water policeman in the 1860s at Fremantle for ten years, then moved to Busselton (bought a Town lot in 1868) as a shipwright. Then to Bunbury, where he was a lighthouse keeper and pier master in charge of all shipping until the appointment of the Harbour Master, Captain Abrahamson. In 1863 he nominated Henry Mainland (1842-) of Shetland Island. 


SERVING, A. McIntosh. He arrived on the ship Greyhound from the Eastern colonies. He was engaged in sawmilling at Bunbury in 1876.


SLATOR, Thomas. He was a Captain in the 96th Regiment. Thomas was stationed in Western Australia from 1847-1849. He was at Bunbury in 1847, and he went absent without leave.


SLATTERY, Patrick. He is the son of Patrick and Rose Hanlon. Patrick married Mary Flynn (1866-), who was the daughter of Henry Stanes and Mary. Patrick and Mary's children were Flossie, Cecil, Joe, Teresa, George and Dan. Patrick lived in Ferguson and Bunbury. 


SLOAN, J. of Bunbury. He employed two ticket of leave men in 1871 and 1872, the latter at Wandering. 


SMITH, George (2/1820-25/07/1852). George died in Perth. He was the second son of Charles Henry Smith. George arrived on 18/03/1841 on the ship Parkfield as a settler. On 21/10/1851, George married Rachel Catherine Clifton (10/03/1833-02/07/1852) at Bunbury. Rachel died in Perth. She was the daughter of Marshall Waller. George and Rachel's child was Henry Clifton (1852-1852). All three are buried at Australind. George was a settler at Australind in association with Duncan and John McKenzie.


SMITH, George Armistead (1829-). He may have been an expiree. George possibly arrived on 31/01/1852 on the ship Marion. On 10/01/1854 and later on 27/01/1854, George married Mary Flanagan (or Hanaghan) (1834-) in Bunbury. Mary arrived on 28/04/1853 on the ship Palestine. George and Mary's children were Emma Ann (1856-), Alice Maud (1859-), Amy Mary (1861-), Andrew Robert (1864-) and Henry (1869-), born in Perth as Roman Catholic.


SMITH, George King. He arrived on 04/03/1875. George married Mary Thomas in Bunbury.


SMITH, James Herbert. On 23/04/1902, he married Florence Juanita Troode (28/07/1880-22/10/1916) in Albany. Florence was the daughter of Edward Thomas Pomeroy and Elizabeth. His remarriage was on 03/09/1919 with Blanche Helen Troode (06/06/1867-08/06/1952). She was the sister of his first wife. James lived in Bunbury.


SMITH, John (1838-). John was an ex-convict. He arrived on 22/12/1866 on the ship Corona. Admitted to Mt Eliza Depot from Bunbury on 10/02/1686 and 09/12/1886.


SMITH, Maurice Brett (1816-01/05/1893). Maurice was born in Ireland and is buried in Australind. He arrived on 02/01/1840 on the ship Westmoreland. On 25/12/1872, Maurice married Anna Maria Elizabeth Clarke ( 27/07/1844-30/08/1927) in Bunbury. She was the daughter of Ephraim and Sarah. Maurice and Anna's children were Anna Maria Sophia (1874-), Priscilla Eliza Frances (1876-), Louisa (1877-), Clara Ruth (1879-), Agnes Adeline (1880-), Kathleen Norah (1882-), Caroline Beatrice (1886-) and Maurice Brett Clarke (1889-). Maurice was employed as a tutor by Marshall Cufton. He bought 160 acres of land in the Harvey district in 1844, was a sheep farmer at "Giginup" extending to "Uduc" by 1854 with large pastoral leases. He employed forty-three ticket of leave men on occasions from 1864-1878, including five cooks and a herdsman. His widow managed "Uduc" with the assistance of her brothers.


SMITH, Thomas of Bunbury. He employed two ticket of leave men in 1865. 


SMITH, Thomas. He died around 1869. On 28/09/1862, Thomas married Teresa Kann (1840-) in Bunbury. Teresa arrived 24/06/1862 on the ship Mary Harrison and was a gardener in Vasse. Mrs Smith was a laundress from 1867-1873 in Busselton. 


SMITH, Thomas Metcalfe (22/04/1862). He lived in Bunbury. 


SMITH, W. H. of Bunbury. He employed a ticket of leave man in 1868. 


SMITH, William (1814-1869) in Bunbury. He was an ex-convict and died in Bunbury. He arrived on 01/01/1858 on the ship Nile. 


SMITH, William (1831-). He was an ex-convict. William arrived on 11/02/1861 on the ship Palmerston. Sent from Bunbury to Mt Elua Invalid Depot on 05/05/1887.


SMITH, William Henry (1830-13/05/1893). William was born in England and died in Northam. William may have been the son of Richard and his first wife. On 30/01/1863, William married Kate Elizabeth Blake (1846-11/02/1919) in Bunbury. Kate was born in England and died in Northam. She was the daughter of William and Susan. She arrived on 08/04/1863 on the ship Burlington. William and Kate's children were Emma Amelia (1864-), Thomas (1865-), Kate Elizabeth (1867-), Arthur (1870-1874), Mary Jane (1872-), Eliza Evelyn (1874-), Edmond Charles (1878-1878), Edith May (1880-) and George Herbert (1882-). In Northam, William worked as a carpenter and farmer in the 1860s, later as a storekeeper. He was a member of the Church of England.


SNELL, William (1821-16/09/1887). He was an ex-convict and died at Mt Eliza Depot. William arrived 28/06/1855 on the ship Adelaide. He was admitted to Mt. Eliza Invalid Depot 09/1885 from Bunbury. 


SOLOMONS, James (1834-). He was an ex-convict. James arrived on 14/07/1867 on the ship Norwood. He lived in Bunbury and worked as a Blacksmith. In 1877, James signed a petition regarding discrimination against expirees. He departed on 24/05/1879 for South Australia. 


SOUTHERN, Thomas. He was an enrolled pensioner. Travelled from Bunbury to Mount Eliza on 27/08/1886.


SPAULDING, Reuban. He was one of Child's whaling crew. A Warrant for his arrest at Bunbury was issued in 1844.


SPENCE, Thomas (1843-). Thomas was born in Ireland. He arrived on 12/12/1863 on the ship Tartar. Thomas married Mary, and their child was Thomas Alexander (1867-). He was a Police Constable and was transferred from Bunbury to Fremantle in 1865. Again later to Greenough in 1866. Nominated by cousin Police Constable James Hovell of Bunbury. 


SPENCER, Miss. She lived in Bunbury and conducted a Young Ladies' Day School between 1884-1885.


SPENCER, Augustus Frederick (21/08/1872-24/08/1926). Augustus was born in Western Australia. He was the son of William and Hannah. On 16/01/1897, Augustus married Agnes Maude Teede (03/08/1874-28/02/1930). Agnes was the daughter of George Robert and Hannah. Elizabeth. Augustus and Agnes's children were Gladys Maud (1898-1898) and Frank Ernest (1898-1976). He was in a partnership with his brother Charles Edwin, taking over their father's business in Bunbury. He was a shipping merchant and was also in business at Collie. Member local Municipal Council 1899-. He bought out his brother in 1908 and held many important agencies. He was a member of the local Racing Club and other clubs and the local Chamber of Commerce. Augustus was educated at Briggs School, Fremantle. 


SPENCER, Llewellyn Borace (11/04/1875-). He was born in Bunbury as the son of William and Hannah. In 1901, Llewellyn married Mary Olen Johnson. Mary was the daughter of George of Bunbury. He joined the staff of Dalgety and Co at Fremantle in 1893. He moved to Bunbury in 1896 to open his own business and agency of Dalgety's until 1907, when he moved to Northam, buying "lima" farm. He was a member of the local Agricultural Society and Western Australia Turf Club. He was educated at a Government school in Bunbury and Briggs' Academy, Fremantle.


SPENCER, Thomas. He was a labourer in Bunbury and P.C. in Fremantle from 1865-7. In 1865 he nominated as migrants his brother James (1840-) and William Spencer (1842-). 


SPENCER, Thomas Edwin (25/12/1833-18/06/1904). He was born in England and died in Fremantle. He is the son of Thomas Henry and Margaret (originally Robinson), who arrived in 1862 from Victoria, where he had been for ten years. He married in Victoria in 1855 to Mary Ann Milner (19/05/1835-09/01/1919). Mary was born at the Isle of Man and died in Bunbury. His children were Margaret Anna (1856-), John (1858-), Thomas Edwin (1862-), Charles Henry (1869-) and William Mark Robinson (1867-1893). Thomas came to Bunbury, where he employed thirteen ticket of leave men on occasions 1865-1878, including two cooks, a sawyer and a painter. He visited Victoria on 20/03/1869 on the ship Sea Ripple with Mary, William and Thomas Junior. 


SPENCER, Thomas Henry (1796-03/02/1869). He died in Bunbury. He followed his son William who arrived 06/12/1842 on the ship Trusty. He married Margaret Robinson (1799-31/12/1893). She died in Bunbury. He was a Bunbury Customs Clerk. 


SPENCER, William (1824/5-21/07/1901). He was born in England and died in Bunbury. He is the son of Thomas, who arrived years later. William arrived in Western Australia on 06/12/1842 on the Trusty. He got married on 22/02/1855 in Bunbury to Hannah Properjohn (15/12/1838-08/12/1898). She was born in England and died in Bunbury. She was the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth. She arrived 18/03/1841 on the ship Parkfield. William and Hannah's children were Thomas William (1856-1881), Rebecca Margaret (1857-1940), Prances (1860-), Clara Robinson (1864-1949), Ellen Elizabeth, George Clarence (1866-), Charles Edrin (1868-), Albert Edward Mark (1870-1895), Augustus Frederick (1872-), Llewellyn Horace (1875-), Victor Percy Henry and Zoe. John Scott employed William at "Eelup" as a shepherd. He joined the Police Force as a Mounted Constable and was clerk of courts and tidewaiter at Bunbury for three years. He became involved in building and timber trades and was auctioneer, storekeeper and contractor at Victoria Street and then in premises of late J.Everett. He owned the Wellington Hotel for 15 years. He was also a Town Councillor, Chairman of Road. Board,(1874-) and of Municipality 1875. Also of the Board of Education, Member of the Legislative Council for South-West Province 1896-1901. He erected the town jetty and St. Paul's Church. He also employed forty-one ticket of leave men in 1864-1876, including 15 sawyers and a painter. 


SPUD, Samuel. He employed a ticket of leave man in Bunbury in 1876. 


SQUIRE, William Henry. He married Anna Maria. Their children are William Henry (1884-), born in York, Edward Arthur (1886-), born in York and Rebecca Jane Florence (1888-), born in York. He moved to York in 1884, then to Kojonup in 1886. He then was a Police Constable at Bunbury in 1886 and transferred to Carnarvon in 1887. After being arrested for a robbery and being dismissed from the force, his wife applied for temporary poor relief on 20/07/1887.


STAFFORD, Thomas (1827-02/07/1902). He was an ex-convict. Thomas arrived on 31/08/1853 on the ship Phoebe Dunbar. He Employed eighteen ticket of leave men 1865-1878, including 12 sawyers and a cook at Bunbury, Toodyay, Victoria Plains and Wanneroo. He died at the Old Men's Home, Perth. 


STALLARD, James (08/1848). He was born in Bunbury. He is the son of John and (H)Annah (originally Walker). James married on 24/10/1878 at the Church of England in Busselton to Fanny Smith. Fanny was the daughter of William Henry (a fisherman) and Eliza (originally Storey). Their child was named Rose Hannah (1879-). He moved to Lockeville, where he was an employee of Timber Co. from 1880-1885. He was then a farmer in 1887.


STALLARD, John (1816-). He arrived 18/03/1841 on the ship Parkfield at Australind. He married Hannah Walker (1814-). Their children are John (1841-), Hannah (1843-), Mary Eliza (1846-1920), James (1848-) and Martha (1850-). He was a general labourer. He bought Bunbury Town Lot 1856. He was then a pound keeper from 1874-1876. 


STANSFIELD, J. (or M). He arrived 28/12/1863 on the ship Lord Dalhousie. He employed a ticket of leave labourer in 1872 in Minninup, Bunbury. 


STEVENS, G. F. He employed a ticket of leave fencer at Bunbury in 1876. 


STEVENS, George James Malcolm. He was the youngest son of C.J. of Sydney. He married on 16/02/1886 in Bunbury to Rachael Hislop (-17/04/1941). Rachael died in Perth. She is the daughter of James John Henry and Bridget (originally Mulqueen). Their child was Ailsa Amelia. He was a Perth Barrister in 1886. 


STEVENS, W. F. Bunbury. He was an agent for Messers Connor and McKay, owners of a shipping line 1874-1880. He was the manager of Canning Timber Station (1884-1889). In Perth, he was a timber merchant 1887-1889. He employed thirty ticket of leave men on occasions between 1870-1885 from Perth and Bunbury depots. In addition, he made frequent voyages between Bunbury and Fremantle. 


STEWART, Andrew (-09/11882). He died in Bunbury. He is the son of James and Jane. He married on 26/09/1869 in Fremantle as Roman Catholic to Margaret Ranrahan (1848-). She was the daughter of Margaret. She arrived on 14/01/1868 on the ship Tartar' and was nominated by sister Joanna at Guildford. Their children were Mary Jane (1869-), Andrew John (1871-), born in Fremantle as Roman Catholic, Mary Jane (1872-) and a son (1875-), born in Busselton. Andrew was a Seaman in Fremantle and Bunbury. He was then a policeman in Busselton. He was part-owner of the ship, Belle of Bunbury, in 1877 with Hayward, Gibbs and Reidied. The vessel wrecked in 1887


STINTON, David William (03/03/1859-29/04/1922). He was born in Bunbury and died in Greenbushes. David William was the son of Josiah. He married on 13/03/1883 to Fanny Properjohn (03/05/1865-11/04/1922). She was the daughter of Charles Daniel and Margaret (originally Tuthill). Their children were Josiah Sampson (1886-), Alice Jane (1887-), David Josiah (1889-), John, Evelyn May (1893-), Hubert William (1895-1896) and Fanny Maud (1897-). He lived in Blackwood, then became a carpenter in Bunbury in 1885, then moved to Greenbushes, where he was the discoverer of tin on 05/07/1888 and was rewarded £250. He was a tin miner and maker of sulkies and hobby. He was a member of the Church of England.


STINTON, Josiah/Joseph (1824-10/03/1910). He was born in England and died in Bunbury. He was the son of Thomas and Sara Macklin. Josiah arrived in Western Australia on 20/04/1841 on the ship Henry. He married on 01/02/1852 to Susannah Willey (1832-02/12/1912). She died in Picton, Bunbury. She was the daughter of Thomas John and Susannah (originally Barker Grig). Their children were Susan (1853-1922), Hannah, Sarah (1853-1923), David William (1859-1922), Mary Ann (1862-), Jane (1865-), May (1870-), a son died at infancy, and a daughter died in infancy. Josiah was formerly a ship's boy and was employed by William Forrest. He was a stonemason and builder in the 1840s where he indentured to Wollaston. He went to Fremantle as a wheelwright, then worked in Bunbury as a miller. He also worked in Pinjarra and Balingup districts. His wife kept 300 beehives. He employed a ticket of leave man at Murray River in 1864. 


STOKES, Francis William (1855-12/04/1929). He was born in Melbourne and died in Katrine Northam. He was the son of William Alexander and Sophia (originally Carroll). He arrived in Western Australia in 1872. He got married on 09/10/1880 at York with the Church of England to Margaretta Georgia Hoops (23/12/1855-1918). She was born in York and died in Perth. She is the daughter of William Wigmore and Margaretta Hardy Seymour (originally Meares). Their children were Mary Louisa (1881-1952), Amy Edith (1883-1962), Ernest William Alexander (1886-), born in York, Ruby Ellen (1889-), born in York and Eileen Adelaide (1894-1964). He was the Manager of Union Bank, York (1887-1889). He was a member of the Church of England.  


STOKES, Thomas (1865-01/03/1930). He was born in Greenough and died in Bunbury. He was the son of William and Ellen (originally O'Neill), who arrived in Western Australia in 1860. Thomas married on 05/06/1888 to Jane Baker. Jane arrived in Western Australia on 21/05/1885 on the ship Glen Avon from London. Their children were Ivy (1889-1965), Murie (1892-1915), Thomas (1894-1915), he was a soldier at Gallipoli during World War I and Lily (1895-1978). Thomas was a Saddler and bootmaker in Geraldton. He went to Bunbury in 1898 and established "Stokes Aerated Water Factory". He sank the first bore at Bunbury and supplied the town. Thomas founded the Bunbury Fire Brigade and was Superintendent. He was also a Councillor in 1898. 


STOKES, William (1808-16/05/1881). He died in Geraldton. He arrived in 1860, with free passages granted for himself, his wife and his family. He married Ellen O'Neill (1819-02/11/1878). She died in Geraldton. Their children were Sarah (1839-1840), who died in Ireland, William (1841-1845), John (1843-1871), who died in Champion Bay, Ellen (-1849), who died in Birmingham, Louisa (-1901), Henry (1850-), born in Falkland Island, James (1852-1927), Evelina (1854-1952), Mary (Elizabeth) (1859-1921), George (1862-) and Thomas (1865-1930), died in Bunbury. William was formerly a Private in the 30th Regent and then a lighthouse keeper at Falkland Island for seven years. He later went to Greenough, where the Pensioner Lot was granted. With the death of his wife, he retired to Geraldton.


STRAIN, James (1811-). He arrived in Western Australia on 25/06/1840 on the Runnymede with the Regiment. He married on 10/1844 to Mary Agnes Wollaston. Their children were Mary Agnes (1845-) and J .C. (1847). James arrived as a Corporal of 51st and was promoted to Sergeant by 1845. He was stationed at Williams in 1840, then Bunbury in 1844 and Pinjarra in 1845-7. Finally, he departed with his Regiment.


STRICKLAND, David John (15/08/1843-02/05/1878). He died in Perth. He was the son of Henry Robert and Hary Ann (originally Hokin). He married on 26/10/1871 at the Guildford Church of England to Martha Eliza Mitchell (1842-10/05/1907). She was the daughter of Henry James and Mary Ann (originally Jennings). She arrived in Western Australia on 08/04/1863 aboard the Burlington. Their children were David Henry Robert (1873-), WaIter Charles (1874-), Kate Ciara (1877-) and Hilda Mona (1878-). He was a farmer in Blackwood from 1868-72. He won 1st prize for wheat at Sydney International Colonial Exhibition 06/1873. He was a farmer at "Roelands" Bunbury in 1871. He employed six ticket of leave men at Preston on occasions from 1864-1873.


SUTTON, Benjamin (11/09/1850-29/04/1930). He died in Busselton. He was the son of Samuel and Ann (originally Twining). He married on 12/12/1877 in Bunbury to Margaret Jane Properjohn (27/06/1862-14/09/1936). She is the daughter of Charles David and Margaret (originally Tuthill). Their children were Eliza Ann, Alma May, Charles Alfred, Clarence Edward, George Hector, Victor, who died in infancy, Ivy, Vernon, Allan, Horace and Gladys Sabina. He was a Mounted Policeman from 1874-1895 in Geraldton, then moved to Cossack, then to Bunbury in 1879 and Busselton in 1879. On retirement, he owned first milk round at Busselton.  


SUTTON, Thomas A (1830-). He was an ex-convict. Thomas arrived on 29/05/1863 on the Clyde with his wife in the United Kingdom. He married Margaret Sheenan. Their children were Frances Helen and M. Michael (1886-), born in Fremantle to a Roman Catholic. He was listed as a carpenter at Perth from 1880-1889. He employed seven ticket of leave men at Guildford and Perth during 1864-1878, primarily carpenters and possibly one other at Bunbury in 1869. 


SWINBORNE, Charles Somerville. He married on 11/02/1857 in Bunbury to Ann Thompson. Ann was a widow. He was a member of the Church of England. 


SYMMONS, Charles A. J. (1804-18/10/1887). He died in Bunbury. Charles arrived on 12/12/1839 aboard the Jean with his wife and three children. He is married to Joanna Elliot (1800-16/09/1858). Joanna died in Perth. Their children were George (1826-), Herbert John George (1830-1857) and Amy (1841-), born in Western Australia. Charles was a Civil Servant from 1839-1869. In 1849, he was Protector of Natives and on the Board of Public Works. He was appointed in 1855 Immigration Agent. In 1856 he was Acting Sheriff, in 1861-2 at Champion Bay. In 1866 as Residential Magistrate. He was Justice of Peace in Fremantle. He was a Police Magistrate and an Honorable Member of the Working Men's Association. In Fremantle 1868, G.Y. Moore included Symmons' notes on Aboriginal people in his "Descriptive Vocabulary" in 1842. He visited England on 15/06/1878 aboard the Helena Hena and returned to Western Australia on 16/09/1878. He also went to Colombo and came back aboard the Hydaspes on 21/09/1886. 


SYRED, William Charles (08/12/1857-12/10/1934). He was born in Bunbury and died in Toodyay. He was the son of William Edward and Frances (originally Martin). William got married on 16/04/1890 in Toodyay as Roman Catholic to Catherine Beard 08/03/1866 (Toodyay) (-08.12.1935). She is the daughter of William and Mary (originally Avery). Their children were Mary F. (1891-), Charles Edward (1893-), Margaret (1896-1901), Lucy Rebecca (1894-), Evelyn Louisa (1901-), William, Alice, Alma and Kathleen. He was a shepherd in sandalwood and a farmer at "Stonybrook", Wattening, Toodyay Valley in his youth. He was also a member of the local Agriculture Society. He was Church of England, while his wife was a Roman Catholic.
