GILL, John

(1812-09/09/1833)

He came to Western Australia aboard the Jane from Tasmania. He married on 12/1843 in Picton to Mary Ann Heritage (1823-). She arrived in Western Australia on 06/12/1842 aboard the Trusty. Their child was Charles (1845-1875), who was lost at sea on the ship Wild Wave. John was a Soldier in the 21st Regiment, and he was discharged in 07/1840. After his service, he became a Carpenter, then a Police Constable. By 1849 he lived in Bunbury and bought Town Lot 1850. John was also a Gaoler from 1854-7 and then a Postmaster from 1855-7.

GILL, Charles

(1845-12/1875)

Charles died lost at sea. Charles was the son of John of Bunbury. Charles was a Hutchison grazier at Murchison House owned by his uncle Charles von Bibra. Charles applied for 6000 acres. He received a pastoral lease in 1859, and he employed two ticket of leave men during 1868-9. Charles was well-loved by Aborigines since childhood. Charles went pearling in North West waters. He was the owner of the ships Wild Wave and Swan 1875. The vessel went down in a cyclone off Exmouth Gulf.

GILCHRIST, James

James married on 29/07/1861 in Fremantle to Margaret Whelan (1837-04/06/1870). Margaret arrived in Western Australia on 06/04/1859 aboard the Hamilla Mitchell. James remarried on 27/12/1873 in Bunbury to Eleanor Elwood (1848-). Elanor arrived in Western Australia on 11/08/1867 aboard the Palestine. James's children were Elizabeth (1864-), who was born in York, Christina (1866-), who was born in Albany, James (1869, died in infancy), William Francis (1879-1886), who was born in Toodyay and James Levi (1882-1885) who was also born in Toodyay. James was a Police Constable but travelled to York in 1865 then Albany that year. He bought Albany Town Lots in 1867, listed with three daughters. In 1871, he became Police Sergeant in Bunbury during 1873, then in Toodyay during 1878, Northam during 1880, later dismissed in 1888 due to staff reductions.

Richard lived in Bunbury, where he was a master mariner. In 1877 he signed a petition regarding discrimination against expirees.

GIBSON, William

(06/04/1868-06/1955).

He was born in Bunbury as the son of William and Amelia. He married on 18/04/1892 in Fremantle to Margaret Rebecca Bull (20/08/1867-0/11/1950). Margaret was born in Fremantle as the daughter of Edward and Charlotte. Their children were Bilda (1893-), WaIter John (1894-). Harold Ernest (1896-), William Leslie (1899-), Clifford Henry (1902-), Mabel Amelia (1904-), Edward Lincoln (1906-) and Elsie (1911-). William lived in Bunbury, where he worked as a pit sawyer, then established an orchard and vineyard in Clarke Street for Ephriam Clarke. He was supplying dried fruits and wines to Goldfield's market. Gibson bought some of this land where he worked and lived for most of his life.

William was born in England and died in Bunbury. He was an expiree. He was the son of William. He arrived in Western Australia on 04/08/1852 aboard the William Jardine, leaving his wife Ann and their children in England. He applied in 1859 for them to follow as assisted migrants. William remarried on 08/10/1861 in Picton to Amelia Need(e)s (1845-07/01/1927). Amelia was born in England and died in South Bunbury. She was the daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth. She arrived in Western Australia on 24/03/1854 aboard the Victory with her mother. Their children were Elizabeth (1863-1938), Susannah (1864-1956), Henry (1866-1965), William (1868-), Benjamin (1870-1930), George (1872-1946), Amelia (1874-), WaIter (1876-1965), Ernest (1878 - W.W.1. France), Horace (1879-1879), Jesse (1881-1960), Owen (1883- ~1915), Herbert (1885-) and Clarence (1886-1959). William was a small estate farmer at "Crandon". In Bunbury, he was a tenant of Hyman Lipschitz at "Preston Farm" in 1862. He bought several small lots of land, including 40 acres in Wellington district, in 1861. In total, William owned about 100 acres. Their house (demolished in 1968) stood opposite the North end of Gibson Street, named after him.

Thomas was born in Western Australia as the son of John and Ann. He married on 09/12/1869 in Bunbury Maria Agnes Moulton (04/09/1845-11/03/1930). Maria was the daughter of J. Abraham Hattbews and Mary. Their children were WaIter John (1872-1956), Ada Ann (1874-1955), Herbert James (1877-1951), Bertha Mary (1879-1938), Frank Thomas (1881-1963), Ella Haud (1883-1975), Agnes Helen (1884-), Habel (1887-1965) and Stella Capel (1894-1960). Thomas was a farmer and grazier at "Dingup House" Nelson lot 82. He had a leasehold also on Donnelly River.

John was born in England and died in Balbarrup. He was the son of James and Sarah. John arrived in Western Australia on 20/08/1842 aboard the Simon Taylor, with his wife Ann (1818-12/07/1896). Ann was born in England and died in Balbarrup. She is the daughter of John. John and Ann married on 22/03/1842 in England. Their children were Thomas (1842-1897), Jemina (1843-), who was born in Burrswood, Emma (1844-), John (1845-1845), John (1846-1862), Jesse (1848-), Elba (1851-1909), George (1853-), Helen (1855-1946) and Amos Wells (1862-). John was an agricultural labourer, first at Burrswood, then Canning, Serpentine and Harvey. He was a farmer and grazier at "Balbarrup," Manjimup. He owned 80 acres in 1868 in the Nelson district. John held Nelson lot 31 and 32 and extensive pastoral leases in partnership with his family. The Post Office at his home in 1864 was known as Blackwood P.O. until 1870. Travelled monthly from Bunbury. He employed eight ticket of leave men from 1851-1871.

Jesse was born in Western Australia. Jesse was the son of John and Ann. He married on 12/01/1876 in Bunbury to Eliza "Lily" Clarke (27/07/1850-23/09/1919). Eliza was the daughter of Ephraim. Their children were Ephraim John (1877-1969), Clarence French (1878-1957), Alfred (died in infancy), Jesse Thomas (1882-1953), Abi Ann (1883-1959), Kathleen Eliza (1885-1952), Ruth Kate (1889-1975), Emma (1890-1909), Ivan (1898-) who was adopted at eight years. Jesse was a farmer and grazier at "Springdale", east of Manjimup. He built a homestead in 1883.

He is the son of John and Ann. Amos married on 04/08/1896 in Bunbury to Alice Miller (1872-1924). Their children were James (1896-1963), Murial, Thomas Wells, Minnie and Jack (1909-1935). Amos lived in Bridgetown, where he was a farmer and pastoral leaseholder in Balbarrup. Amos staffed the post and telegraph office there until 1909.

She arrived 26/12/1860 aboard the Escort as a servant to Mr Clifton. James and Charlotte's children were Emma (1846-), Panny (1847-1848), Robert (1848), Jane (1850), John (1856). Herald William (1859) Samuel. James and Alice's children were Charlotte (1864-), Amelia (1867-), Ernest Alf-red (1868-1918) (Northam). Wallace (1869), Lilian (1872), Ethelbert (1873), Athelstan (1877), James (1880). He first lived at Picton, then Australind in the 1840s and Perth in the 1850s. When James moved to Bunbury, he became a Wheelwright and carpenter in the 1860s and shipwright. He built the Star of South in 1875. He employed two ticket of leave men 1868 at Bunbury.
